Learn all about Magic Ticker Fill and how to use Proxy Tickers for full analysis on a portfolio.
Magic Ticker Fill Function
The Magic Ticker Fill function in Portfolio Intelligence is a powerful tool designed to simplify and expedite your extraction and analysis process, especially when dealing with statements that lack ticker symbols.
What is Magic Ticker Fill?
Magic Ticker Fill is a feature that automatically searches for and matches the closest publicly traded ticker to your unmatched holdings, including stocks, mutual funds, and ETFs. It's particularly useful when you upload a statement without ticker symbols, ensuring that the information can still be extracted and analyzed.
How to Use Magic Ticker Fill:
- Upload your PDF statement to Portfolio Intelligence.
- Navigate to the "Holdings" tab.
- For any unmatched holdings, click the Magic Ticker Fill button.
- The system will search for and assign the closest publicly traded ticker to each unmatched holding.
- Once holdings are matched, you'll see a green checkmark for any matched holdings and an explanation of the matching holding.
Benefits of Magic Ticker Fill:
- Saves time and effort in manual ticker assignment
- Enables analysis of statements without ticker symbols
- Matches trusts and non-public retirement funds with the closest publicly traded ticker
- Allows for analysis of the entire statement, even with non-standard holdings
Edit-After-Upload Feature:
If you're not satisfied with an automatic match, you can use the edit-after-upload feature to manually adjust the ticker symbol. This ensures you have full control over the accuracy of your portfolio data.
Proxy Tickers
Sometimes, you may encounter holdings that don't have a direct match in our database or lack historical data. This is where proxy tickers come in handy.
What are Proxy Tickers?
Proxy tickers allow you to substitute a holding that doesn't have a match or lacks data with another publicly traded security that has similar characteristics. This enables you to more accurately represent the risk and return profile of the original holding in your analysis.
When to Use Proxy Tickers:
- For holdings with no match (e.g., a private retirement trust)
- For individual bonds (as we don't have historical bond returns data)
How to Use Proxy Tickers:
- In the "Holdings" tab of Portfolio Intelligence, locate the holding you want to assign a proxy for.
- Click on the holding.
- Search for a ticker to use as a proxy.
- Select the appropriate proxy from the search results.
Example of Using a Proxy Ticker:
Let's say you have an individual municipal bond in a client's portfolio. Since we don't have historical return data for individual bonds, you could use a proxy like this:
- Original Holding: Individual Municipal Bond
- Proxy Ticker: MUB (iShares National Muni Bond ETF)
By using MUB as a proxy, you're approximating the risk and return characteristics of the individual municipal bond with a broadly diversified municipal bond ETF.
Remember, while proxy tickers are a useful tool for handling securities without direct matches or historical data, they are approximations. Always use your professional judgment when applying proxy tickers in your analysis.
By utilizing both the Magic Ticker Fill function and Proxy Tickers feature in Portfolio Intelligence, you can efficiently handle a wide range of portfolio scenarios, providing more comprehensive and accurate analyses for your clients.
